Starting Swimming with your Baby

Starting swimming with your baby can feel nerve wracking, but don't worry, Sarah from Puddle Ducks is here to splash away your worries and answer your top questions about baby swimming. With her help, you'll feel calm, confident, and ready to dive in with your little one!

Meet Sarah, Owner of the Puddle Ducks franchise for Bristol & Bath

Sarah had her son, Sam in 2003 and when he was 5 weeks old they started baby swimming lessons.  She loved it so much she decided to train to be a baby and toddler swimming teacher. After a couple of years, she wanted to do more, and demand was so high she launched her own swim school, In 2008 Puddle Ducks Bristol and Bath launched.

How old should my baby be before they go swimming?

We recommend your baby's umbilical cord has dropped off, but aside from that your baby will enjoy being in the water from birth. Your baby doesn't need to have had any vaccinations, but the pool does need to be toasty and warm. It's a good idea to phone the swimming pool first to ensure it is suitable for your baby's age.

What should I pack in my swimming bag for my baby's first swim?

  • A snuggly towel for your baby after their swim
  • A swim nappy and a neoprene nappy - using the double nappy technique prevents any unexpected leaks!
  • A spare towel or changing mat for comfortable changing where changing tables aren't available
  • Warm clothes including a wooly hat in winter months for post swim
  • Your baby's usual nappy to change into after your swim
  • Snacks for toddlers - swimming is hungry work!
  • Don't forget your own costume and towel. We recommend arriving swim ready with your cosi on underneath to make it super easy when you arrive at the pool.
  • We love a hair towel for you too!

How do I know if the pool is clean and safe for my baby?

A well-maintained swimming pool will have clear, non slimy water and you should be able to see the bottom of the pool. The pool walls and floor should be clean and free of algae. It's a good sign to see cleaning staff around the pool hall and changing rooms, and it's reassuring to see a pool noticeboard with the temperature and chlorine levels, with dates and times alongside.

What should I do if my baby cries and doesn't like the water?

Don't panic! Babies cry and it can take a little while for them to get used to the sensation of the water. Relax and smile to put them at ease. Don't worry about doing any 'swimming' activities and if your baby doesn't settle after a while, sit on the poolside, wrap your baby in a towel and let them watch the other swimmers. You might want to try getting back in again to give it another go - let you baby take the lead.

How can I help my baby feel relaxed and calm in the water?

Gradually introduce your baby to the water, starting with bath time and then moving them into the pool, allowing them to adjust at their own pace. It's great fun to have some water play with toys and gentle movements like swaying and bobbing, helping your baby get used to the feeling of water on their bodies. Sing songs and rhymes and create a relaxed, smiley, fun atmosphere. You can introduce water words like 'splash!' and lots of watery sounds effects - Have fun!
